2016 Scorecard Vote
Representative Don Young (R-AK) offered an amendment to H.R. 5538, the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2017, which would block the removal of three proposed Arctic Ocean lease sales that were contained in the federal government’s draft 2017-2022 offshore drilling leasing plan. The Arctic Ocean is ecologically rich, fragile, unforgiving, and remote. Furthermore, the region lacks the infrastructure to contain or clean up an oil spill. This amendment, by attempting to keep portions of the Arctic Ocean open for leasing, would put this important place at risk of an oil spill and make climate change worse. On July 13, the House approved the Young amendment by a vote of 242-185 (House roll call vote 461). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The House passed H.R. 5538 on July 14, but the Senate took no action on this legislation.
