Representative John James (R-MI)  sponsored H.J.Res. 136, a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval, which would repeal the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) final rule establishing critical limits on climate- and health-harming pollution from cars and light trucks and block any substantially similar regulations in the future. The CRA is an extreme and blunt tool that is being used by anti-environmental members of Congress who want to permanently strip away protections for our environment, communities, wildlife, and natural heritage. EPA’s cleaner vehicles rule is vital in reducing emissions, safeguarding the environment, and protecting public health. The transportation sector is the largest source of climate pollution – accounting for 29% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. EPA’s cleaner cars standards will help to reduce such climate pollution. EPA’s rule also protects the air that we breathe by reducing health-harming pollutants like soot or particulate pollution and nitrogen oxides, a component of smog pollution. Cleaner vehicles are especially important in low-wealth communities and communities of color that are disproportionately impacted by tailpipe pollutants.
