Clean Water
House Roll Call Vote 648
Issue: Water

Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (S. 2770). The vote is on whether to override President Nixon's veto of the bill, which authorizes $24.7 billion over three years to reach the goal of eliminating all discharges of pollutants by 1985 and making waters safe for fish, wildlife, and recreation by 1983. The President felt this was too much to spend on clean water, and after Congress overrode his veto he still refused to spend most of the money authorized. (Passed 247-23; October 18, 1972; "Yes" is the correct vote.)
