Blocking Funding for United Nations
House Roll Call Vote 320
Issues: Appropriations, Climate Change, Justice & Democracy, Agriculture

Representative Tom Tiffany (R-WI) sponsored an amendment to H.R. 8771, the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2025, which would prohibit any funding from going to the United Nations (UN) or any UN affiliated agency. Barring funding for the UN would hamstring U.S. influence in shaping global efforts, rules, and norms at exactly the moment other major powers are seeking to maximize their influence and diminish the U.S.'s role. A funding prohibition would undercut U.S. influence and participation in the mission of critical UN agencies such as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to protect childrens' lives and fulfill their potential, the the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to fight global hunger, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to support the global response to the climate crisis. On June 27, the House rejected the Tiffany amendment by a vote of 149-259 (House roll call vote 320). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
