Blocking Gas Furnace Efficiency Standards
Senate Roll Call Vote 176
Issues: Clean Energy, Clean Air, Climate Change

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) sponsored S.J. Res. 58, a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval, which would repeal the Department of Energy’s rule to implement an energy efficiency standard for household gas furnaces. The CRA is an extreme and blunt tool that is being used by anti-environmental members of Congress who want to permanently strip away protections for our environment, communities, wildlife, and natural heritage. If enacted, S.J. Res. 58 would stick families with higher average annual home heating bills by forcing them to rely on outdated, inefficient technology. Higher efficiency standards, which are mandated under a court-approved settlement and haven’t been updated since 1987, would also reduce CO2 emissions and other harmful pollutants, improving overall public health. On May 21, the Senate approved S.J. Res 58 by a vote of 50-45 (Senate roll call vote 176). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
