1976 Scorecard Vote
National Lakeshore Amendments (HR 11455). The vote is on the Taylor motion to suspend the rules and pass a bill authorizing $53.5 million to add 4,340 acres to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This is the nation's first government-protected lakeshore, located on the southeastern coast of Lake Michigan. The expansion provided for in the bill would accomplish 3 major objectives: 1) protect unique biological and geological areas from industrial and residential development, 2) provide buffer zones to protect fragile and unusual ecosystems from damage by nearby steel mills, dump sites and highways, and 3) provide a valuable recreation area for the 10 million people living within 2 hours of the park. February 17, 1976. Motion agreed to 272-118. "YES" is the correct vote.
