Representative David Valadao (R-CA) sponsored H.R. 3964, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Emergency Water Delivery Act, which would eliminate state and federal environmental protections for California’s rivers, threaten water quality in California’s Bay-Delta estuary, and undermine the reliability of the state’s water supplies. This bill would derail implementation of a bipartisan package of water policy reform bills adopted in 2009 and would eliminate desperately-needed protections for salmon and native fisheries, putting thousands of fishing jobs at risk. This legislation prioritizes the interests of large agribusinesses and uses California’s current low water supplies as an excuse to weaken federal and state environmental laws, when the real driver is the historic drought afflicting the state. On February 5, the House approved H.R. 3964 by a vote of 229-191 (House roll call vote 50). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The Senate took no action on this legislation.
