Voting Rights and Democracy Reforms
House Roll Call Vote 62
Issue: Justice & Democracy

Representative John Sarbanes (D-MD) sponsored H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a sweeping democracy reform bill that would address a range of threats to our democracy by expanding voting rights, strengthening ethics reforms, and reducing the influence of money in our elections. Everyone’s right to be heard and counted in the political process is essential to the function of our democracy and protection of our environment, and far too often people of color and frontline communities are targeted by restrictive voting laws and partisan gerrymandering. By ensuring that voters have access to the ballot box and their voices are not drowned out by outsized corporate interests, the people will be better equipped to hold politicians accountable and accomplish meaningful climate action. On March 3, the House approved H.R. 1 by a vote of 220-210 (House roll call vote 62). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The Senate rejected a motion to invoke cloture on this legislation in 2021.
