Noise / SST
Cámara Votación Nominal 298
Tema: Transporte

Transportation Appropriations Fiscal 1978 (H.R. 7557): Vote is on the Koch amendment to prohibit funds in the Act for air traffic control at JFK International Airport from being used on supersonic aircraft not in compliance with FAA noise standards for subsonic aircraft. The intent was to ban SST landing at JFK since their noise levels exceed FAA standards by 200%. There is increasing evidence that these high noise levels will cause health problems and emotional stress. A southern California study showed a 30% higher rate of mental hospital admissions in a community near the Los Angeles airport than in a closely matched control community. Environmentalists oppose the SST both because of noise and the fact that it consumes much more jet fuel than the largest commercial jet. Rejected 128-274. June 8, 1977. YES is the correct vote.
