The amendment would have required the Forest Service to consider the option of selective cutting in all National Forests, and to require selective cutting rather than clear-cutting in the eastern mixed hardwood National Forests. Large scale clear-cutting and Òeven-aged managementÓ forestry practices involve stripping an area of all its trees, causing erosion, loss of soil nutrients and stream siltation. Frequently the area is reforested with trees that are all the same species and age, resulting in a tree farm rather than a natural forest.
