Restricting Electric Vehicle Tax Credits
Senado Votación Nominal 332
Tema: Cambio Climático, Aire

Senator Deb Fischer (R – NE) offered an amendment to S.Con.Res.14, the Budget Resolution for FY22, which would slow down the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by restricting eligibility for the federal EV tax credit. Robust tax credits are critical to accelerating the adoption of EVs - our best bet for transitioning to a zero emissions transportation sector - across the country. The tax credit helps boost demand for these cars by reducing upfront costs, which in turn helps drive manufacturing to greater scale, decrease prices for this cleaner technology, and stimulate expanded charging infrastructure.  Instead of encouraging more EV sales through tax credits, the Fischer amendment would hurt EV sales by adding restrictive income caps, which would make it harder to access the tax credit for middle income households, and unreasonably low vehicle price caps, which would make many electric vehicles comparable to popular fossil-fueled models ineligible for the credit. On August 10th, the Senate approved the Fischer amendment by a vote of 48-51(Senate roll call vote 332). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
