1973 Scorecard Vote
Legal Services Corporation Act (H.R. 7824). The vote is on the Hogan amendment to forbid the Legal Services Corporation from helping women obtain legal aid to get abortions. Many hospitals have refused to perform abortions in spite of the Supreme Court decision that abortion is a constitutional right. The President's Population Commission has stressed the need for broad public access to legal abortions in order to reduce population growth, and the Hogan amendment was opposed by Zero Population Growth and Planned Parenthood. Many environmental groups also advocated broad public access to abortion because overpopulation hastens the depletion of resources and is a root cause of nearly all environmental problems. The Nixon Administration took no official position on the amendment. June 21, 1973. Passed 301-68. No is the correct vote.
