1975 Scorecard Vote
Nuclear Regulatory Authorizations (H.R. 7001). The vote is on the Long amendment to bar the use of any of the money in the bill to export nuclear fuel to countries which refused to sign the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, or which did not place all their nuclear facilities under international safeguards. Without such restrictions, the export of nuclear material will make it easier for other nations to produce their own nuclear weapons and greatly increase the chances of nuclear war. Even if other nations did not use their nuclear fuel for this purpose, many of them have weaker safety and environmental standards for nuclear power plants than in the U.S. and run a greater risk of nuclear accidents. Amendment rejected 117-139. June 20, 1975. ÒYESÓ is the correct vote.
