Atomic Energy Authorization bill (H.R. 8662). The vote is on the Podell amendment to allow states to set stronger regulations for radioactive emissions than those set by the Atomic Energy Commission. Many eminent scientist believe that the AEC's double role as both a regulator and promoter of atomic energy makes it impossible for the agency to be objective. There is still doubt whether any level of radioactive emissions can be considered safe. If states must accept the risks of nuclear power, environmentalists maintain that they should also have the right to set standards strict enough to protect their resources and public health, especially in areas around Lake Michigan than have heavy concentrations of nuclear power plants.
