Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) offered an amendment to H.R. 5538, the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2017, which would have struck damaging anti-parks language in the bill that prohibited the president from designating national monuments on over 160 million acres of our public lands. The Antiquities Act provided initial protections for nearly half of America’s national parks—including the Grand Canyon, Acadia, Muir Woods, and Olympic National Parks—and this amendment ensures that more special places can be protected for future generations. On July 13, the House rejected the Grijalva amendment by a vote of 202-225 (House roll call vote 437). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The House passed H.R. 5538 on July 14, but the Senate took no action on this legislation.
