Cancelling the Oil and Gas Leasing pause
Senate Roll Call Vote 320
Issues: Drilling, Dirty Energy, Climate Change, Oceans, Lands/Forests

Senator Cynthia Lummis (R–WY) offered an amendment to S.Con.Res.14, the Budget Resolution for FY22, which would cancel the pause on new federal oil and gas leasing under the mistaken notion of lowering gas prices and reducing energy dependence on OPEC. A leasing pause has not threatened our energy security or made America dependent on foreign oil. Fossil fuel companies already have far more land than they plan to use with 10,000 approved idle land leases stockpiled; these companies use the majority of leases to pad company valuation assessments. The amendment would allow the previous administration’s disastrous leasing practices to continue. The amendment would also prevent the Biden administration from making the necessary pause needed to review this program and ensure it aligns with the best interests of taxpayers, our health, our public lands, and our climate. On August 10, the Senate rejected the Lummis amendment  by a vote of 49-50 (Senate roll call vote 320).  NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
