The Senate considered President Biden’s nomination of Pete Buttigieg to serve as secretary of Transportation. The Department of Transportation plays an important role in addressing the climate crisis because the transportation sector is now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.. Buttigieg is a strong advocate for transportation policies and programs that reduce pollution, enhance resilience, and strengthen communities. Buttigieg committed to lead the department’s efforts to address climate change through initiatives and investments in low and zero emission transportation and climate-resilient infrastructure, ensuring investments create good-paying jobs and help address the racial and economic inequities. On February 2, the Senate confirmed Buttigieg to be secretary of Transportation by a vote of 86-13, becoming the first openly LGBTQ person to serve as a Cabinet secretary (Senate roll call vote 11).
