1991 Scorecard Vote
Representative Jimmy Hayes (D LA-7) proposed a bill, H.R. 1330, to gut the Clean Water Act which would endanger millions of acres of wetlands across the country. Wetlands provide essential fish and wildlife habitat, improve water quality, and serve other invaluable functions. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that over 290,000 acres of wetlands are lost each year, a rate of more than 30 acres per hour. Congress must work to strengthen Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and deter attempts, like Representative Hayes' bill, which would weaken protection for this vanishing habitat.
The League has included co-sponsorship of H.R. 1330 as an anti-environment position. Currently 169 members of Congress have co-sponsored H.R. 1330.
